IUI (intrauterine insemination)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the methods used to treat infertility. Its essence lies in the transfer of sperm into the uterus in order for conception to occur.

Unlike IVF, with IUI, the egg is fertilized inside the woman's body. This procedure can be performed with both the husband's sperm and the donor's sperm.

IUI helps sperm get into the uterus, but the sperm still needs to reach the egg and enter it on their own.

The most common indications for which intrauterine insemination is recommended are low sperm count in the ejaculate or reduced sperm motility. Your doctor may also recommend an IUI if:

IUI is not recommended to:

To perform the manipulation, it is necessary that the woman ovulates - at least, one passable fallopian tube must occur, and a sample of healthy sperm is also needed. Each insemination is tied in time to the woman's cycle - during ovulation the manipulation itself is carried out, and after two weeks you can do a pregnancy test.

At the Institute of Reproductive Medicine DAHNO, the IUI procedure is performed on the 12th-16th day of a woman's monthly cycle. These days, a woman ovulates. Before the procedure, the ejaculate of the man is cleaned in the laboratory, the spermatozoa are separated from the seminal fluid. This process maximizes the number of sperm that will reach the uterus. Through a special catheter, bypassing the cervical canal, the sperm is injected directly into the woman's uterus. Intrauterine insemination lasts a few minutes and is painless.

How can a man prepare for intrauterine insemination?

Man will need to provide a semen sample on the day of the procedure. Before giving a sample, it is necessary to refrain from ejaculation for several days, usually from 2 to 5. During semen clearning - the separation of spermatozoa from seminal fluid, faster specimens will be separated from slow ones. The prepared sperm sample will be placed in a catheter from which it will enter the woman's uterus. If frozen bio-material is used, the semen is thawed and treated in the same way as fresh.

What are the chances of conception after IUI?

It is difficult to talk about the statistics of the success of intrauterine insemination. At best, about 20% lead to pregnancy. The onset of pregnancy depends on many factors, but the cause of your infertility is the main one. As a rule, from 2 to 6 IUI procedures are carried out. But in any case, you should consult with your doctor. Only he can give treatment recommendations for your couple. Although intrauterine insemination is a cheaper and less invasive treatment for infertility, pregnancy rates are lower than IVF programs. Despite this fact, some couples prefer the "more traditional" method of conception compared to IVF.

How much does intrauterine insemination cost?

The cost of intrauterine insemination can vary from clinic to clinic. But this method of treatment remains the most affordable. Insemination in Kyiv is carried out in our clinic.

The doctors of the DAHNO clinic will diagnose your couple and determine whether such treatment is suitable for you, because intrauterine insemination has a number of limitations, which we mentioned earlier. Doctors advise to reconsider your habits and lifestyle before starting infertility treatment. It is important to normalize your diet, avoid alcohol, tobacco, cigarettes or other potentially toxic substances. Reconsider your weight, if necessary - get better, or do your weight loss. The mode of work and sleep also greatly affects your body. The above aspects are something you can control yourself. By improving your quality of life, you add a few percent to your success in treating infertility.
